Time: 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Location: Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, 118 Woodland Avenue, Dayton, Ohio

Part 1 – The Body Language of Trees
12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Trees often communicate internal deficiencies in their growth as a result of how they manage internal defects. This two-hour portion of the program will introduce students to the concepts of callus formation, woundwood, flexure, and response growth. As part of this class, we will also discuss the Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees (CODIT) model and the differences in tree species' management of decay. Students will learn about the types of decay that affect trees and will learn how to identify trees exhibiting specific issues like butt rot, codominance of trunks, limbs and branches, and other issues. Lunch will be provided by Tree Care, Inc.
Part 2 – Proper Tree Planting
2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Learn about the proper techniques for the installation of trees following the newly updated Sample Ohio Tree Planting Specifications. Students will learn how to apply this standard to their everyday tree-planting assignments. Persons attending the entirety of the program will receive a certificate of completion and may appear on the Chapter’s consumer site, Trees4Ohio.org.
Woodland Cemetery is one of the nation's five oldest rural garden cemeteries and a unique cultural, botanical and educational resource in the heart of Dayton, Ohio. Visit the grave site of the Wright Brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and more. A stunning lookout shelter provides a beautiful view of the City of Dayton. Founded in 1841 by John Van Cleve who chose the original 40-acre site for its hilltop views and a remarkable variety of trees. In 1843, Mr. Van Cleve inventoried the trees on the property, finding 41 species. In the early years, special care was taken to preserve the finest specimens of trees and shrubs to retain the area's natural beauty. Many of the same species are still represented on the grounds. Woodland is best known for its collection of Oak trees.
